Do You Need Wedding Cake Samples? Shelf Life, Lead Times & Eloping with a Fruit Cake

One of the questions I’m being asked more and more is whether couples can try wedding cake samples before ordering — especially when planning a smaller wedding or an elopement.

It’s a really sensible question, and one I’m always happy to answer.

Whether you’re planning a full celebration, or escaping north with your partner, a dog, and a carefully chosen fruit cake, here’s what’s helpful to know.

Do wedding cakes need a tasting?

Traditionally, couples attend tastings months in advance. But fruit cake is a little different — and wonderfully forgiving.

Because fruit cake is made well ahead of time and improves as it matures, many couples order with confidence based on:

  • Ingredients

  • Reviews

  • Shelf life

  • And sometimes, a small sample for reassurance

I’m always happy to offer rum or brandy samples for couples considering our iced wedding fruit cakes, particularly for 8″ cakes and larger. It helps you decide which flavour suits you best, without pressure or obligation.

Rum or brandy — what’s the difference?

Both are classic choices, and both are gently cooked during baking.

  • Brandy gives a traditional, warming flavour — familiar and timeless.

  • Rum is slightly deeper and richer, with a more rounded sweetness.

Neither tastes “boozy”, but each brings its own character. If you’re undecided, samples can make that choice much easier.

How long do wedding fruit cakes keep?

This is where fruit cake really shines — especially for couples who are eloping or travelling.

  • Uncut, iced fruit cakes keep for 3–4 months

  • Once cut, they’ll keep for 2–5 weeks, depending on how well they’re wrapped

  • Stored in foil or greaseproof paper, in an airtight tin, in a cool cupboard — never the fridge

This means you can comfortably have your cake delivered well before your wedding day, with no last-minute stress.

Planning an elopement with a fruit cake

More couples are choosing intimate weddings — sometimes just the two of them — and fruit cake fits beautifully into that story.

You can:

  • Decorate it yourselves

  • Add ribbons, flowers, or a simple topper

  • Cut it on the day, then enjoy it again once you’re home

It becomes part of the memory, not something rushed or wasted.

Lead times & delivery

To ensure your cake arrives in perfect condition, I usually recommend ordering around two weeks in advance, with delivery planned a few days before you need it. That gives us time to bake, ice, and pack it carefully so it travels well.
